What Are the 5 Most Common Dental Emergencies?

A dental emergency is a problem affecting the teeth and supporting tissues that require immediate attention from a qualified professional. Dental emergencies do not always involve pain, though it is a common indicator that something needs to be looked at. Most dental problems can be cured at home. However, some emergencies need immediate professional attention.

5 Common Dental Emergencies

Dental Emergencies cannot be classified into specific points. They are varied and differ from patient to patient.

The following are 5 of the most common dental emergencies:

Losing A Filling Or A Crown

A dental filling coming off or losing a dental crown is considered a dental emergency. It does not cause any pain. However, losing the filling or crown leaves the affected tooth exposed to harm. There are chances of the tooth getting infected and injury to the inner cheek and tongue.

Dental crowns can be placed back into place by hand, but only temporarily. You still need to visit your dentist to get them cemented back.

Dental fillings, on the other hand, cannot be fixed manually. It is best to contact your dentist as soon as possible to get your tooth filled again.

You should not panic if you accidentally swallow the crown or fillings. Calmly explain your situation to the dentists and follow their advice.

Severe Toothaches

There can be various reasons why you can get toothaches. Inflammation of the tooth’s pulp is the most common reason. The intensity of the pain and discomfort determines how you should handle it. If you feel pain when you bite down, it could be due to a cracked tooth or to you grinding your teeth. This, however, could indicate the presence of an abscess.

You can also experience pain if there is something stuck between your teeth. Some foods get jammed between the tooth gaps and are hard to take out. Brushing your teeth thoroughly can solve this problem. If the object is stuck for too long and is causing bleeding, it is best to go to the ER.

Gum Bleeding Or Swelling

Bleeding gums are some of the most serious dental emergencies. Gums bleeding during brushing and flossing due to aggressive movements is normal. It becomes a serious issue if there is pain involved. Bleeding gums indicate serious conditions like cavities or gingivitis within the teeth. A proper oral hygiene routine can ensure these problems are avoided.

Swelled gums should also be taken seriously. If the swelling does not reduce by over-the-counter drugs, you should contact a dentist immediately. It could be the indication of early stages gum disease.

Knocked Out/ Fractured Teeth

A tooth can get knocked out or fractured by accidents or other traumatic situations. It is best not to try to pull out the affected teeth, and certainly not try to put them back in place. There are also chances that your jaw is broken or misaligned.

Our dentists at Melissa Dental & Orthodontics will attend to you immediately if you come to us with such emergencies.

Infection Or Abscess

Infections are signs that there is something wrong with your tooth. Dental infections are not visible and can start as just toothache. They can develop rapidly if left unattended.

Tooth abscesses are a serious dental emergency that affects your tooth’s root canal. They cause bad breath and severe pain. If left untreated, you might need to have your tooth extracted.
